NFL And American Heart Association Bring Exercise To The Classroom With Launch Of What Moves U

Addressing the continuing decline of physical education programs in many of America's schools and diminishing amount of exercise among today's children, the National Football League and American Heart Association today announced the launch of the What Moves U national program. The awareness campaign which includes a unique curriculum supplement is designed to incorporate physical activity in classroom lessons and encourage physical activity to an increasingly inactive generation of children.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, American Heart Association Chairman Andy Buroker, and teachers from Manhattan's Adolph S. Ochs School and Academy launched the program this morning by demonstrating how the program can work in any classroom setting.

What Moves U includes several key elements: an in-school activity kit created for teachers, by teachers, which includes curriculum-based activity sheets, program-specific learning materials and in-school promotional materials; and, an interactive fitness website for children. The initiative is supported by a national media campaign including television, radio, print, and movie cinema PSAs. NFL teams and American Heart Association affiliates are working together to reach kids in local communities nationwide.

Unique from other physical fitness programs for students, the What Moves U in-school, 25-lesson activity kit has been developed by teachers for teachers of various academic disciplines including Science, Social Studies, Math, Physical Education and Language Arts, to help integrate physical activity into their existing lesson plans. The program encourages teachers to begin their students' days with morning stretches, incorporate two minutes of activity for every 20 minutes of desk time, and assign homework that includes physical activity.

More than 25,000 middle schools nationwide will receive the activity kit, and teachers, parents and kids will have the opportunity to download it and participate in the program at http://www.whatmovesu.com.

In spring 2006, teachers from across the country submitted lesson plans to the American Heart Association for consideration of inclusion in the What Moves U activity kit. The 25 selected teachers received credit in the kit for their winning submissions, which show how movement and activity can be integrated into the classroom. The submitted program lessons were selected and revised by the American Heart Association.

"Today's children are not getting the necessary daily dose of physical activity as recommended by today's health and fitness experts," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "Our players know the importance of staying physically active and it's important that their youngest fans also understand the value of incorporating exercise into their lives. With the expertise of the American Heart Association and the popularity of our teams and players, this program will help more children understand the benefits of getting active."

In addition to the classroom lessons, children will learn through the program website how their favorite NFL players stay active and their favorite "moves." They also will have the opportunity to win NFL prizes, including a trip to the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl by winning fitness points through interactive games and quizzes as well as by participating in physical activities in the classroom and at home.

"The coming together of the American Heart Association and the National Football League to affect healthy changes in the lives of today's youth is an unbeatable combination," said American Heart Association Chairman Andy Buroker. "We are pleased about this unique opportunity to combine our reputation as a trusted health authority and the NFL's coveted position in the hearts of youths to provide teachers and students with tools necessary to encourage healthier lives by incorporating physical activity into their daily routines."

The What Moves U initiative is funded by NFL Charities, the charitable arm of the National Football League, and its teams and players.
