NY Times Profiles Sen Rodham Clinton's Views Over Time on Abortion, Other Issues

The New York Times on Wednesday examined Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) changing views on certain issues, including abortion, as she begins her re-election campaign for the Senate. Since she was first lady of Arkansas in the 1980s, Rodham Clinton has "paired her support for abortion rights with the goal of preventing unwanted pregnancies," according to the Times. However, over the past five years Rodham Clinton has shifted her emphasis on abortion from promising abortion-rights supporters in 2000 that she would be "second to none as an ally" to calling abortion a "sad, even tragic choice" in a speech earlier this year. "Doing that has enabled [Rodham] Clinton to give Democratic women what they want to hear by championing abortion rights at political rallies, while stressing prevention, sexual education and abstinence when she wants to reach out to the middle," the Times reports. Parental notification is the only abortion-related issue in which Rodham Clinton's views show any change over time. While in Arkansas, she said she supported laws requiring abortion providers to notify parents when a minor is seeking an abortion unless a judge grants a bypass. She now supports a New York law that requires health care providers to give information about medical options and risks of procedures, including abortions, only to patients, and she voted against a federal bill that would make it illegal to help a minor obtain an abortion outside of her home state without her parents' consent. However, Rodham Clinton's aides have said she would support parental notification with the option of judicial bypass in states that do not follow New York's "informed consent" model, the Times reports (Hernandez/Healy, New York Times, 7/13).
