New Approach To Youth Psychiatric Care Creates Safer Environments - Non-coercive Techniques Help Children Achieve A Sense Of Control

Adolescents and children with serious emotional illness can be admitted to a psychiatric hospital when they pose a danger to themselves or others. A new guide, published in the current issue of the The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing, proposes a system of assessment, and techniques for nurses and other healthcare providers treating these patients.

The techniques focus on behavioral, cognitive and affective interventions that can help children and adolescents achieve a sense of personal control over their thoughts, feelings and behaviors - a central goal of in-patient treatment.

“Children and adolescents enter inpatient psychiatric facilities when their illness has become severe and potentially dangerous,” says study author Kathleen R. Delaney, RN, NP, DNSc. Hospitalization is a time of crisis for both the patient and the family, and healthcare providers are key to helping resolve the crisis and putting children and adolescents back on the path to optimum development.

“Psychiatric nurses dealing with young patients have the difficult task of understanding their behavior and, at times, devising the best course of action to calm an agitated youngster,” says Delaney. “Providing nurses with assessment guidelines helps them to develop a deeper understanding of individual patients so they can provide sensitive and personalized care.”

The last national survey of mental health services for children indicated that some 285,000 children and adolescents are admitted yearly to inpatient psychiatric services. Nurses are the largest professional group caring for these children during their inpatient stay. Creating a safe environment demands that nurses draw on recent developmental theory to understand a child’s behavior and evidence-based practices to tailor a response. These assessment guides and suggested interventions address that demand.

The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing is the only nursing journal to focus exclusively on issues of child and adolescent mental health around the world. As a primary resource for nurses and other healthcare professionals in clinical practice, educator roles, and those conducting research in mental health and psychiatric care, the journal includes peer-reviewed, original articles from a wide range of contributors in a broad variety of settings.
