New Drug Safety Office Would Just Add to Bureaucracy, Sen Judd Gregg says

Senator Judd Gregg (USA) does not like the idea of a new independent bureau responsible for drug safety. He says all it would achieve would be more layers of FDA bureaucracy.

Senator Gregg thinks the solution lies in investing more resources in the reviews and approvals of new medications.

Senator Greggis chairman of the Senate health committee, he stands down at the end of this year.

However, other politicians think the responsibilities of approving new drugs and keeping an eye on drugs already approved should be carried out by separate bodies. At the moment both responsibilities are carried out within the FDA.

This new idea has been growing ever since Vioxx was taken off the market as it was considered to be unsafe.
