New Health Initiative To Battle The Bulge, Australia
Australia's leading nutrition organisation, the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and media partner
Network Ten will launch the inaugural Australia's Healthy Weight Week on 20 January to help Australians
Eat Better, Live Better, Feel Better NOW!
Australia's Healthy Weight Week will give Australians the support they need to take control of their health
to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and is part of DAA's comprehensive obesity strategy to tackle
Australia's health crisis due to rising rates of overweight and obesity and its associated diseases including
diabetes and heart disease.
Dr Clare Collins, Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and spokesperson for the DAA, says that
Australia's Healthy Weight Week is set to become an annual event on the health calendar and will help
Australian's make lifestyle changes they can stick to for life.
'Fad diets are not the answer. We know that people who go on fad diets regain the weight quickly with
many ending up heavier than they were to start with. We also know that being overweight increases the risk
of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.' Dr Collins said.
According to Dr Collins there are nine steps to a healthy weight to live better and feel better:
- Eat at least two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day
- Eat breakfast
- Choose wholegrain breads and cereals regularly
- Choose lean meat
- Choose reduced fat dairy food
- Limit high kilojoule and high fat food and drink to once a week or less
- Eat smaller servings
- Drink more water
- Be active for 30-60 minutes each day
DAA has developed a comprehensive website http://www.healthyweightweek.com.au which has practical
information and tips on healthy eating and being active, interactive features including waist circumference
assessment tool and information on where to go for additional individualised expert advice.
The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the professional body representing dietitians nationally. Accredited Practising
Dietitian (APD) is the only national credential recognised by the Australian Government, Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs and most
private health funds as the quality standard for nutrition and dietetics services in Australia.
