New Targets Mean Nothing If You Are A NHS Staff Member - Plaid Cymru, Wales

"I have received an email from NHS staff which illustrates the reality of the NHS in Wales. Morale is at an all time low and electioneering from New Labour politicians' will hardly help matters. The staff that contacted Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales sum up their frustration of working under atrocious conditions, vacancies are not being filled and staff are looking for work elsewhere. Failing to respect NHS staff will not help New Labour deliver on their new hospital waiting time targets. New Labour in Wales has a poor record in achieving their hospital waiting time targets. We did not hear today what is the strategy to deliver these new waiting time targets."

We are writing to you to voice our concerns about the ward we work on at present in ... Hospital.
We are working under atrocious conditions at the present time, i.e. low numbers of nurses, high ratio of highly dependant patients, increasing workloads, being unable to take meal breaks and never finishing on time at the end of a shift.
Morale is at an all time low, vacancies are not being filled and staff are looking for work elsewhere (some outside of nursing).
Due to the low number of nurses working on the ward patients lives are increasingly being put at risk and the nursing staff are becoming increasingly frustrated at not being able to provide the high standard of care that they are trained to deliver.
Sickness levels are rising due to nurses working long hours and working extra shifts (without being able to take time back).
When help is asked from the management to try to alleviate the situation, they appear to be totally unconcerned about the situation and are only concerned with waiting lists and increasing the throughput of patients. Appeals for an increase in nursing numbers appear to have fallen on deaf ears despite there being at least two workload audits highlighting the need for extra nursing staff for the ward and showing that the ward is severely understaffed. Money was made available for two extra nurses, but it was blocked, yet the service manager was able to advertise for an assistant at a cost of up to £30,000 a year!
We all feel that if the situation does not improve drastically and soon, something tragic will happen and lives will be lost!
