New Work Programme For NICE, UK
The Institute's technology appraisal, clinical guideline and public health work programmes are referred by the Department of Health. Topics for referral include both new and emerging health technologies as well as drugs, devices and procedures that are already being used but there is variation in the way they are used.
Dawn Primarolo, the Minister with responsibility for Public Health and NICE said:
"This work programme shows the Government's continued commitment to ensuring that NICE tackles a wide range of issues that are important to the NHS and important to patients and their carers.
"NICE is being asked to produce guidance on severe mental illness in conjunction with substance misuse. We have also asked NICE to develop joint public health and clinical guidance on alcohol use disorders that will not only cover prevention and early identification but also initial management.
"As part of its technology appraisal programme, NICE will produce guidance on a number of new cancer drugs and a new drug for the treatment of venous thromboembolism."
The NHS is required to make drugs available throughout England and Wales where NICE advises that they are clinically and cost effective.

1. Technology appraisals on new treatments for venous thromboembolism, multiple myeloma, breast cancer and lung cancer are part of this work programme.
2. NICE's clinical guidelines are broader guidance on best care for all aspects of the treatment of specific conditions. As part of the 15th wave work programme Ministers have asked NICE to develop clinical guidelines on autism in children and adolescents, management of bedwetting in children, hypertension in pregnancy and severe mental illness in conjunction with problematic substance abuse. To date NICE has issued 62 guidelines on clinical areas such as schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, lung cancer, depression and fertility.
3. Two combined public health and clinical guidance topics on alcohol use disorders as well as two public health topics - needle exchange schemes and improving uptake of immunisation programmes - have also been referred to NICE.
4. To date NICE has published five pieces of public health intervention guidance, on topics such as smoking cessation, substance abuse and physical activity and one public health programme guidance on population and community level behaviour change.

Single Technology Appraisals
- Lenalidomide for Multiple Myeloma
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of lenalidomide within its licensed indication in combination with dexamethasone for the treatment of multiple myeloma in people who have received at least one prior therapy.
- Dabigatran Etexilate for Venous Thromboembolism
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of dabigatran etexilate within its licensed indication for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after elective hip or knee replacement surgery in adults.
- Lapatinib for Hormone-Sensitive Breast Cancer
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of lapatinib within its licensed indication in combination with letrozole for the first-line treatment of metastatic hormone-sensitive breast cancer.
- Capecitabine for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of capecitabine within its licensed indication for the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer.
- Cetuximab for First-Line Treatment of Colorectal Cancer
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of cetuximab within its licensed indication for the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer
- Cetuximab for Advanced Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of cetuximab within its licensed indication for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
- Ixabepilone for Breast Cancer
To appraise the clinical and cost effectiveness of ixabepilone within its licensed indication for the treatment of metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer.
