Nurse Struck Off For Falsifying Records, UK

A 37 year old registered adult nurse from Wigan, Lancashire has been struck off the Nursing and Midwifery Council register after being found guilty of falsifying a patient's records in an attempt to cover up omissions in his care.

Mrs Victoria Galang was employed at St Georges Nursing Home in Wigan when in August 2006 she made false entries in the record of a patient indicating she had provided care when she had not done so. Specifically that;

-- During the nightshift of 15/16 August 2006 left Patient A on the floor between about 2.00am and 6.15am.

-- On 16 August 2006 made false records in relation to Patient A, more particularly;

- (i) Recorded in the Daily Report for Patient A in the Accident Report Book that he was found on the floor at 2.30am on 16 August when he had been on the floor from 2.00am
- (ii) Recorded assisting Patient A back to bed at 2.30am on 16 August when you had not done so
- (iii) Recorded finding Patient A lying on the floor in his room at about 6.25am on 16 August when you had not done so
- On 16 August, having discovered Patient A on the floor at about 2.00am, failed to carry out a baseline observations on him.

Commenting on the panel's decision to strike her name from the register, NMC spokesperson, Leila Harris said: "Mrs Galang admitted the charges and the panel heard evidence proving that her fitness to practise was impaired as a result of her misconduct. In light of the fact that she attempted to deliberately conceal her actions there was potential that she could have caused harm to a patient. Although this was an isolated incident on a previously unblemished career, the panel felt that to leave her registration unrestricted after the findings that have been made would damage public confidence in the profession."

Notes

- The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the UK regulator for two professions, nursing and midwifery. The primary purpose of the NMC is protection of the public. It does this through maintaining a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses eligible to practise within the UK and by setting standards for their education, training and conduct. Currently the number of registrants exceeds 686,000. The Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 (The Order), sets out the NMC's role and responsibilities.

- The independent panel is selected from a pool of individuals appointed by the Appointments Board. They come from a variety of backgrounds and are not NMC Council members, nor do they sit on any committee of the Council.
