Nurses Reject Chancellors Call For Pay Freeze, UK

Commenting on a recommendation made by Chancellor Gordon Brown to limit public sector workers pay to 2% until 2011, Dr Beverly Malone, General Secretary of the RCN said:

"The Chancellor's recommendation that public sector pay awards should be limited to 2% - below the current rate of inflation - would effectively result in a pay cut for nurses and other public sector workers. It fails to recognise nurses' skill and dedication in delivering high quality patient care, and would fail to cover the true cost of living. This recommendation is also yet another thinly veiled attempt to neutralise the role of independent pay review bodies."

"The pay review body (PRB) responsible for nurses pay has made it clear that it will decide which factors to consider when recommending a pay award. The RCN is committed to the pay review process and strongly supports the independence of the PRB. As we go into the next round of pay negotiations the RCN has a clear message for Government - a 2% pay award is simply not enough."
