Preventing spread of rabies among racoons in New York State

On Saturday, May 7, the New York State Health Department - working closely with the City Health Department - is baiting a small residential area along the Queens/ Long Island border to prevent the spread of rabies virus among raccoons in the area. This effort is in response to a growing number of rabid raccoons found in Nassau County in recent months. As Queens shares a border with Nassau County, a small border area is being baited. The majority of baiting is taking place in Nassau County, also in collaboration with the State Health Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services (see Nassau County press release online at http://www.co.nassau.ny.us/health/pr050205.html).

The bait will be applied in Queens by State workers on the ground this Saturday, May 7 during daylight hours in residential sections of Little Neck, Glen Oaks and Floral Park in areas bordered by Little Neck Parkway to the west, Northern Boulevard to the north, Jericho Turnpike to the south and the Nassau border to the east (see map). Raccoons are attracted by the brown, fish-scented bait, which conceals a small packet of liquid vaccine about one square inch in size. When raccoons consume the bait, they become immunized and cannot be infected with rabies.

Parents and caregivers in the area should supervise children's outdoor activities during and up to one week following bait distribution. Pets should be kept on leashes for about a week after the vaccine distribution. The vaccine isn't harmful to pets, but it can cause vomiting if they consume it. The bait is labeled "Rabies Vaccine Live Vaccinia Vector. Do Not Disturb, Merial, Inc Us Vet Lic. No. 298 1-877-722-6725." Pictures of the bait are online: health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/zoonoses/vaccpict.htm.

-- If you have bare skin contact with the bait, call the Poison Control Center at 212-POISONS. Seek immediate medical attention if the liquid is ingested.

-- It is not possible to get rabies from the vaccine, but it does contain a weakened form of another virus that can cause skin infections in rare circumstances.

-- Residents who find unopened bait on their property where pets or children are more likely to encounter it can toss it under trees or bushes. Anyone who needs to touch the bait should wear gloves or use a plastic bag.

-- If you suspect your pet consumed the product, do not try to remove the bait from your pet's mouth.

-- Raccoons or other wild animals that appear sick or aggressive should be reported to 212-POISONS (212-764-7667) or 311.
