Rep. Castle Calls on President Bush To Reconsider Veto on Stem Cell Bill

Rep Michael Castle (R-Del) on Tuesday sent a letter to President Bush asking him to reconsider his plan to veto a bill... (HR 810/S 471) that would expand federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, CQ HealthBeat reports (CQ HealthBeat, 8/10). The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 -- which has been approved by the House but has stalled in the Senate -- would allow federal funding for research using stem cells derived from embryos originally created for fertility treatments and willingly donated by patients. Bush's current policy allows federal funding for embryonic stem cell research only when conducted using stem cell lines created on or before Aug. 9, 2001 (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 8/1). In the letter, Castle -- who co-wrote HR 810 with Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) -- said that since Bush issued his executive order there have been many advances in embryonic stem cell research that "warrant an expanded federal policy." Castle said the U.S. has a "moral obligation" to move forward with embryonic stem cell research because 2.4 million U.S. residents die annually from "a short list of diseases" that might be treated or cured as a result of the research. In addition, Castle said the restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research are causing the U.S. to fall behind other countries as the world's leader in medical research. He also highlighted the bipartisan support for the issue, including the endorsement of the bill by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and 50 House Republicans. "I am so passionate about this issue because world-renowned scientists truly believe embryonic stem cell research holds the most promise for treating and curing diseases than any other medical advancement to date," Castle wrote (CQ HealthBeat, 8/10).
