Response to Royal College of Radiologists' audit on cancer waiting times UK

Dame Gill Oliver, Director of Service Development, Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: "Macmillan is concerned to hear that cancer patients are having to wait longer than the recommended guidelines for their radiotherapy treatment. We know that delays in waiting times are a cause of anxiety and distress, and can contribute to a less favourable outcome if urgent treatment is delayed.

"We need to see a renewed effort from the government to promote and train new radiographers, physicists and clinical oncologists to tackle the staffing shortages, ensure that equipment is being used to its maximum efficiency, and a high level national programme to speed up the commissioning of new equipment. With the numbers of people affected by cancer continuing to increase, demand for radiotherapy treatment can only increase."

Notes to Editors:

Macmillan Cancer Relief helps people who are living with cancer. Each and every day 747 people in the UK are told they have cancer. There are now over a million people living with cancer, and four in ten will receive a diagnosis during their lifetime.

As well as taking action today to support people with cancer, we're shaping the future of cancer care. Our increasing range of services, including our Macmillan nurses, doctors and other health professionals, cancer care centres, a range of cancer information, practical help at home and help with money, is funded entirely through the generosity of our supporters.

Thanks to them, Macmillan provides the practical and emotional support which will change the lives of people living with cancer today and tomorrow.
