Royal Microscopical Society Bid For European Microscopy Congress 2012 Successful
The aim of the RMS's 2012 bid was to take advantage of the attention that London will receive in the run-up to and during the Olympics and Paralympics, and to stage a genuine festival of microscopy immediately afterwards at London's ExCeL from 16th to 21st September 2012.
The bid was submitted in January and Professor Mark Rainforth, President of the RMS, presented it in September to the General Council of the European Microscopy Society during EMC 2008. The bid was received very positively and accepted unanimously.
"The aim is to bring all disciplines of light, electron and scanning microscopy together at a European level and to stage the most inclusive event ever", explained Rob Flavin, RMS Executive Director. "Many of the positive features of MICROSCIENCE will be incorporated and a host of new ideas will be introduced for what will be the largest and most ambitious event in the Society's history."
Since ExCeL will be an Olympic and Paralympic venue it is anticipated that the event will benefit greatly from the large scale investment in local transport infrastructure and accommodation facilities. This has already proved an excellent venue for the RMS's own highly successful MICROSCIENCE biennial conference and exhibition.
Professor Rainforth added, "Our aim in 2012 is to host the most successful and inclusive congress in EMC history and leave a legacy that will benefit microscopy for many, many years to come." The event will showcase the latest research and developments in all forms of microscopy through the exhibition, whilst also educating and sharing scientific findings through the accompanying scientific conference, workshops, tutorials and discussions.
