SARS like virus in wild Chinese horseshoe bats, Hong Kong

Scientists have found a SARS-like virus in wild Chinese horseshoe bats in Hong Kong. You can read about this finding in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (SARS = Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). 59 swabs were taken, of which 23 carried the SARS like coronavirus (itbat-SARS-Coronavirus).

After tests the scientists said the itbat-SARS-Coronavirus is closely related to the SARS virus found in humans and civets. They also said that these bats could become a potential threat to human health (because of this newly identified infection).

This finding was the result of an investigation carried our by Prof. Kwok-yung Yuen and his team. They wanted to see how prevalent the SARS coronavirus is in the wild. To date, research has only been carried out on caged animals, specifically palm civets.

Scientists think the infected bats may have come into contact with the civets. (The palm civet is often thought of as a cat. It is not related to the cat at all - it is related to the mongoose. It is called the palm civet (cat) because it is found in palm trees.)
