SUFU 2008 Winter Meeting Highlights Of The BPH Podium Session

UroToday.com - Dr. Kracker from Columbia University reviewed the controversial role of urodynamics (UDS) as it pertains to diagnosis and management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. In their retrospective review of 118 men presenting with LUTS associated with BOO, OAB, or post-prostatectomy incontinence, they found that their original diagnosis (based on history and clinical findings) was changed in 47% of patients, and treatment plan was altered in up to one third of their patients. In addition, detrusor overactivity was noted in 74% of patients with previously clinically undiagnosed OAB, thus providing support for some diagnostic utility of UDS in men with BPH prior to surgical intervention.

In other presentations, Dr. Blaivas described a retrospective review of men with BPH undergoing UDS in order to determine a relationship between bladder compliance and degree of outlet obstruction. They were able to identify an inverse relationship between bladder compliance and obstruction grade, however the clinical applications of this remain to be seen. Dr. Lee from Boston reviewed a series of 92 men undergoing photovaporization of the prostate and found no significant difference in postoperative outcomes in men with prostates 50 g.
