Studies Examine Hospital Costs For Patients With Multiple Conditions, The Link Between Nursing Home Complaints And Quality Of Care

"Hospital Inpatient Costs for Adults With Multiple Chronic Conditions," Medical Care Research and Review: The study, by Bernard Friedman and H. Joanna Jiang of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and colleagues, examines inpatient hospital costs for adult, nonmaternal patients with more than three chronic conditions. The study finds that such patients have a disproportionately large effect on hospital costs each year. According to the study, patients with between two and four chronic conditions account for 51% of all hospitalizations for nonmaternal adult patients. The authors conclude that identifying such patients could help determine new services that should be covered by health plans and in risk adjusting premiums (Friedman et al., Medical Care Research and Review, June 2006).

"Nursing Home Consumer Complaints and Quality of Care: A National View," Medical Care Research and Review: The study, by David Stevenson of Harvard University, examines national data on nursing home complaints that were investigated between 1998 and 2002 to determine whether such complaints can be used to examine quality of care in nursing facilities. Stevenson examined the relationship between consumer complaints and the characteristics of the facility and its residents, as well as other quality measures. He finds that nursing home complaints are indicative of quality concerns and concludes that policymakers can use such complaints as a low-cost way to monitor the quality of care in nursing homes (Stevenson, Medical Care Research and Review, June 2006).
