The Current State of Cancer Research Resources Now Available

"I think we are at the beginning of an exponential increase in the number of, what I call, real validated cancer targets that are going to come along …We also need to link those therapies to the underlining genetics. There is no use in treating a cancer patient with a particular approach if he or she has a genetic makeup that is not going to respond to the therapy. So I think bringing all these things together - which is what the Symposium is about - is going to be the new era in cancer. Is that going to translate into a real meaningful benefit to patients' lives? I think it will," remarked CSHL President Dr. Bruce Stillman at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's 70th Symposium: Molecular Approaches to Controlling Cancer.

More than 500 International visiting scientists and virtually all of CSHL's own cancer researchers took part in the Symposium last month. The goals of the participants during the Symposium were to exchange ideas and information about their recent progress against cancer, and to discuss what the next steps should be in controlling this disease.

Throughout the weekend, some of the world's leading cancer researchers also recorded their riveting sentiments on the state of cancer research, their own research and new therapies and emerging discoveries that were discussed during the June 1-6 meeting including:

-- Bruce Stillman and Scott Lowe, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
-- Ed Harlow, Harvard Medical School
-- Harold Varmus, Joan Massague and James Allison, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
-- Titia De Lange, The Rockefeller University/Johns Hopkins University
-- Alan Ashworth, Institute of Cancer Research (London)
-- Doug Hanahan and Raghu Kalluri, University of California, San Francisco
