The Editor in Chief of The Lancet explains why the journal now looks a little different

Before finding this letter hidden away in The Lancet, you will have already seen that the journal looks a little different from that which arrived in the mail last week. Let me explain.

During the past 18 months, we have had a wide-ranging discussion between editors, advisory board members, authors, and readers about further developing The Lancet as the world's leading global medical journal. The next six months will see some of these efforts come to fruition, both in print and online. I will tell you more about what we plan to do as the year unfolds. But for now - this week's issue.

Our content for July 3 is devoted to the subject of HIV-AIDS and is linked to the International AIDS Conference being held in Bangkok later this month. HIV-AIDS is a major threat to world health. It is appropriate and timely that The Lancet underlines its own commitment to challenging this disease by presenting a forum for critical debate about research and policies designed to turn back the tide of this ferocious epidemic.

Our July 10 issue will report a different aspect of health research today - the clinical implications of a new science for medicine. We are devoting much of next week's Lancet to the subject of stem cells in human disease. The advent of the science of stem cells is a watershed in modern medicine. The Lancet plans to be there from the start.

Thereafter, the journal will settle down into its new rebalanced, restructured, and redesigned format. Here are some of the highlights:

• A new layout to breathe thinking time into the journal's published research and writing, improving readability, clarity, and navigation. For example, the journal is now more clearly divided into three distinct sections: analysis (blue), research (red), and review and opinion (green).

• A strong cover statement underscoring a key theme of that week.

• A single contents page to enable easier scanning of each week's issue.

• Double the amount of editorial comment.

• More than twice the amount of space devoted to commentaries, analysing and interpreting key developments in medicine.

• A more focused news section - World Report - with in-depth features about contemporary health issues from our international correspondents.

• Upgraded reviews of books and new media - Perspectives - concerning topical issues of the day.

As always, the quality and selection of the research, reviews, and series that we publish is at the heart of what we do. I would be delighted to hear from you personally about the changes you will find in this week's Lancet and beyond. Please contact me directly at

My best personal wishes,

Dr Richard Horton FRCP FMedSci
