The Royal College of GPs Announces Affiliation with PRIMHE & MIPCA - UK

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has formed an alliance with the Primary Care Mental Health and Education (Primhe) charity and Migraine in Primary Care Advisors (MIPCA) society.

Affiliation between the RCGP and both organisations recognises the shared interests of the parties and will enable collaborative working on areas of mutual interest.

Dr Graham Archard, Chair of the RCGPs Clinical Network, added: "The College aspires to recognise the quality of primary care associations which have the same core values as our own. Affiliation with these societies can only benefit general practitioners and patients alike through the promotion of best practice and improved communication."

Developing criteria for GPs with a Special Interest (GPwSI) in headache is one area of work resulting from the alliance between MIPCA and the RCGP along with other projects which will promote and provide appropriate headache education for healthcare professionals.

Andrew Dowson, Chairman of MIPCA commented: "MIPCA sees the affiliation to the RCGP as an extremely exciting opportunity. We have a common interest in the quality of primary care diagnosis and treatment of headache and in skills and training of the professionals who deliver this care."

The RCGP and Primhe are already working with the Priory Group on developing primary care mental health networks ('Like Minds'). They have arranged a series of meetings across England and Scotland to develop sustainable activities at local and regional levels amongst those with a special interest in, and enthusiasm for, mental health.

MIPCA and Primhe are also working closely together on issues of multiple morbidity, such as headache and depression to offer training and education to ensure primary care professionals are confident in tailoring optimal solutions to individual patients.

Dr Chris Manning, Chief Executive, Primhe, said: "Primhe is delighted to be affiliated to the RCGP, in the shared quest to enable the sharing of good work and positive practice in primary mental health care. The RCGP and Primhe are both committed to ensuring that core-values in general practice are not deconstructed to the detriment of patient care and professional morale. Further, working with the RCGP Mental Health Taskgroup and the Alliance of Primary Care Societies (also enabled by the RCGP), Primhe is committed to the introduction of established biopsychosocial interventions that work across all disease areas and the dumping of redundant mental-physical and mind-body paradigms."

The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation in the United Kingdom solely for GPs. It aims to encourage and maintain the highest standards of general medical practice and to act as the "voice" of GPs on issues concerned with education; training; research; and clinical standards. Founded in 1952, the RCGP has over 22,500 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline.
