Treasury Focus On Science Good News For The Research Community, UK

The Medical Research Council has welcomed the government's early settlement for the science budget which sees annual growth of 2.7% in real terms until 2011.

During his speech in the Commons, the Chancellor Gordon Brown told MPs: "My view is that in all advanced economies, public and private investment in the great new drivers of growth, innovation and education, will need to rise towards 10 per cent of national income. And as part of our plan to double investment in science, I can announce that in the next four years public investment in science will rise from £5 billion this year to £6.3 billion by 2010-11 - a 25 per cent cash increase."

The Treasury's red book, which fleshes out the Chancellor's statement, says the early settlements will "provide long-term certainty for the research community, and will deliver resources to meet a range of priorities, including further investment to support excellent research; increasing the economic impact of the science base; and implementing the recommendations of the Sainsbury and Cooksey Reviews".

Colin Blakemore, the chief executive of the Medical Research Council, said: "This confirmation of the Government's long-term commitment to scientific excellence is great news for the research community. We hope that the detailed allocation of the science budget, which will be settled in the coming months, will properly sustain the full spectrum of medical research. This Budget will help the research community to adapt to the challenges of the changing global economy and help maintain the skills base for British science. The MRC is fully committed to playing our part in ensuring that the UK maintains its leadership in basic medical research, both in the laboratory and in the clinic. And we will encourage the conversion of scientific breakthroughs into benefits for the public good as rapidly as possible."

The Budget also announced funding of at least £178 million for the Technology Strategy Board, to support Research and Development collaboration with business from which new products, processes and services can emerge.
