Two students die in northern Virginia, another very ill, no one knows why
Health officials say that the first student to die, Courtney Richard, 16, died from a form of meningitis they have not identified. Courtney was a student at Chantilly High School, northern Virginia, USA.
A boy, aged 12, also from the Chantilly area, died from an illness no one seems able to identify - meningitis has been ruled (most probably) out in his case.
A third student from the same area, Chantilly High School, is in hospital with similar symptoms. According to The Washington Post (US newspaper), she is in a stable condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
People in the Chantilly area have become concerned by the mysterious deaths. Health officials say the deaths are not connected - they say they are coincidental. Nevertheless, parents in Chantilly are uneasy.
Laboratory tests revealed that Courtney did NOT have meningitis, neither the deadly nor the more common viral forms.
The 12-year-old boy who died had no symptoms of meningitis. He died at home. Officials said it could be a week before they find out why he died. They said that his death was sudden and unexpected - a complete mystery.
