United States Should Improve Health IT System, Opinion Piece Says
The United States has the "tools to significantly improve the care, cost and convenience of health care for all Americans" but uses an "antiquated" information technology system that is "inefficient and disconnected," Bruce Mehlman, executive director of the... Computer Systems Policy Project, writes in a Washington Times opinion piece. According to Mehlman, although "political leadership is stepping forward" to address the issue of health care IT, "more must be done." He writes that Congress and the Bush administration "will need to step up to the challenge" and fund "cutting-edge initiatives" proposed by HHS National Health Information Technology Coordinator David Brailer, as well as "on-the-ground efforts by providers and payers to adopt and implement change through Medicare." Mehlman adds that a health care system "transformed through greater use of information technology will do more to save lives and save money" (Mehlman, Washington Times, 6/10).
