Wall Street Journal Examines Digital, Film Mammographies

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday examined digital and film mammography, and the question of which is more effective in detecting breast cancer. Both screening types involve X-rays of the breast, but film mammograms use film to display the image, while digital mammograms use electronic imagery to display the X-ray (Armstrong, Wall Street Journal, 5/30). Data released in September 2005 by the National Cancer Institute showed that digital mammography is a better detection tool than traditional film mammography for women with dense breasts; women under age 50, regardless of breast density; and women of any age who were premenopausal or who had experienced at least one menstrual period within 12 months of her last mammogram (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 11/1/05). In an Oct. 27, 2005, New England Journal of Medicine editorial related to the NCI data, D. David Dershaw, a radiologist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, writes that the "advantage offered by digital mammography appears to be limited to a minority of the women who undergo screening ... [because] most women who undergo screening are postmenopausal and at least 50 years old" (Dershaw, NEJM, 10/27/05). In addition, some physicians are concerned that the advantages of digital mammograms are overstated and might cause a delay in women undergoing the procedure while they wait for digital mammograms to be available in their area. About 11% of the 8,800 mammography facilities in the U.S. have digital mammography machines, the Journal reports. The American College of Radiology does not advocate one method of screening over the other but says that it is important for women to undergo a form of mammography regularly (Wall Street Journal, 5/30).
