Washington House Approves Bill Endorsing Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Banning Reproductive Cloning
The Washington House on Tuesday approved 59-36 a bill... (HB 1268) that would endorse human embryonic stem cell research but ban human reproductive cloning in the state, komotv.com reports (komotv.com, 3/16). The bill would establish a stem cell advisory committee that would make suggestions for guidelines for embryonic stem cell research. The 13-member commission -- which would be appointed by the governor -- would consist of seven scientists, two ethicists, two members with legal backgrounds and two members of the public (HB 1268 text, 3/16). In addition, the measure would require patients at fertility clinics to give written consent before donating any unused embryos for stem cell research. Supporters of the measure say that embryonic stem cell research could lead to treatments or cures for several diseases, while opponents say that the research "destroy[s]," according to komotv.com. Washington state law currently does not address stem cell research or human cloning. The measure now goes to the state Senate (komotv.com, 3/16).
