West Australian Examines Lack Of Australian Drug Companies, Physicians Applying For Permission To Import Mifepristone
Few Australian pharmaceutical companies and physicians are applying for permission to supply mifepristone to women in the country, the West Australian reports (Rasdien, West Australian, 6/14). The use of mifepristone, which when taken with misoprostol can cause a medical abortion, was prohibited in the country until the Federal Parliament in February voted to pass legislation that removed Health Minister Tony Abbott's authority to veto the importation of it. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration in April announced that it had authorized two Queensland physicians to import and prescribe the drug (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 4/14). The first shipment of mifepristone was scheduled to be delivered to Cairns, Australia-based obstetrician Caroline de Costa last week. TGA has said that no other Western Australian physicians have applied to be an authorized supplier of the drug. In addition, Medicines Australia has said that major drug companies do not plan to apply for approval to sell the mifepristone, the West Australian reports. Sen. Lyn Allison, who sponsored the bill that removed Abbott's veto power, said that it would be more beneficial for an organization to manufacture or distribute mifepristone than for an individual physician because doctors who apply for permission only can distribute the drug to women in their clinic (West Australian, 6/14).
