Will Breastfeeding Protect An Infant From Obesity? Apparently Not
In this study, researchers measured how much fat 313 American 5-year-olds had. They also asked their parents whether their child had been breastfed. Breastfeeding was found to make no difference.
The researchers, led by Dr Hillary Burdette, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, stressed that breastfeeding has many other benefits which must not be ignored.
In this study, a specially created X-ray machine was used to measure adiposity (child's body fatness). This new technique was devised as a way of overcoming some of the flaws in previous conflicting studies, which used BMI (Body Mass Index).
The children entered the study when they were three years old. Mothers were asked such questions as: 1. Where they breastfed? 2. How long were they breastfed for? 3. When did they start eating infant cereal (plus other types of foods). 4. Did they consume sweetened drinks?
Their adiposity was measured when they were five years old.
Adjustments for such factors as maternal obesity, family income, whether or not the mother smoked during pregnancy, were made.
Their conclusion: Breastfeeding makes no difference to body fatness at the age of five.
