Associated Press Examines Maternity Leave in U.S.; Benefits Lacking Compared With Other Developed Nations
The Associated Press on Tuesday examined maternity leave in the US, which is one of only two industrialized countries worldwide that do not require employers to provide paid maternity leave. According to a Harvard University study conducted last year, all but five of the 168 countries studied provided some form of paid maternity leave, the AP/Yahoo! News reports. Although the Family and Medical Leave Act requires U.S. businesses to allow employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave after a qualifying event, such as the birth of a child, the law applies only to businesses with 50 or more employees. Over the years, several attempts have been made to mandate paid maternity leave nationwide, and legislation that would establish a fund to replace 55% of pay for employees on FMLA leave currently is pending consideration in the House (Svensson, AP/Yahoo! News, 7/26).
