Australian hospital pays $5m damages after boy overdosed and was brain damaged

Nathan Liu suffered severe brain damage after a hospital gave him ten times the amount of dextrose he should have had in a rehydration solution. This happened at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.

The boy was being treated for vomiting - he was nine months old. He now has impaired vision and cerebral palsy as a result.

Lawyer representing the family of Nathan Liu Kathryn Booth, said the family was relieved by the $5 million compromise settlement.

"A terrible mistake was made at the Royal Childrens Hospital in September 2001 but negligence has been admitted and the matter has now settled," she said.
