First UK centre to provide advanced medical skills
The University of Hertfordshire's Intensive Care & Emergency Simulation Centre (HICESC) has become the first UK centre to
adopt training practices developed in the United States.
Qualified nurses and paramedics from all over Europe were trained by doctors from Pittsburgh and Iowa last month to deliver
the Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) course which is sponsored by the National Association of Emergency Technicians
(NAEMT).
AMLS offers a 'think outside the box' method of assessing and managing a patient in medical crisis. It is a two-day programme
that consists of interactive lectures, teaching and evaluation stations. It covers patient assessment, airway management,
assessment of the shock patient, respiratory failure, chest pain, altered mental status and abdominal pain.
Guillaume Alinier, HICESC Coordinator comments: "We are very proud of the fact that we are the first centre in Europe to
offer the ALMS course. This training will enhance the skills of nursing staff and will enable them to recognise and treat
medical conditions. We believe that it will be of particular interest to ambulance services, GPs and nurses."
HICESC is currently putting together a calendar of AMLS training programmes.

Simulation is increasingly being used as a teaching tool for the training of professionals in many disciplines. For example
advanced simulation techniques have been used to train airline pilots for several decades. Since 1995, with the opening of
the industrially sponsored Centre for Advanced Healthcare Technology (CAHT), the University of Hertfordshire has worked on
the development of technological aspects of simulation to facilitate teaching. Subsequently and to put the developments into
context, the Hertfordshire Intensive Care and Emergency Simulation Centre (HICESC) was opened in 1998. HICESC is a teaching
laboratory equipped as a three-adult bed Intensive Care Unit with paediatric and neonatal facilities.
