Fuji Keizai Publishes Report On Disease Prevention/Health Food Market In Japan
The report estimates that the market for disease prevention and health food products reached 2,218.6 billion yen ($19.1 bil) in 2004, and is expected to decline 2% to 2,180.9 billion yen ($18.8 bil) in 2005.
By sector, the functional food segment will rise from 567 billion yen ($4.9 bil) in 2004 to 585.9 billion yen ($5.0 bil) in 2005; the quasi-drug segment will also increase from 140.8 billion yen ($1.2 bil) to 141.2 billion yen ($1.2 bil), the health-oriented food segment will fall from 1,299.5 billion yen ($11.2 bil) to 1,248 billion yen ($10.7 bil), the OTC product segment will decline from 211.4 billion yen ($1.8 bil) to 205.8 billion yen ($1.7 bil).
By company, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will rank top, followed by Yakult Honsha, Meiji Dairies, Taisho Pharmaceutical and Suntory.
The 221-page report is available, in Japanese for 99,000 yen ($853) and 109,000 yen ($915) with a supplemental CD-ROM.
