Society Launches Consultation On Threshold Criteria, UK
Since June 2007, cases involving single one-off dispensing errors which fall below certain threshold criteria have not been referred to the Investigating Committee, but instead have been handled by the Society's Inspectorate. The Society is proposing that the categories of cases suitable for handling in this way should be extended. The consultation seeks views on both the current case handling and the new proposals.
Jeremy Holmes, Chief Executive and Registrar of the Society, said: "The Society believes that formal fitness to practise procedures should be reserved for serious cases where a registrant's fitness to practise is alleged to be impaired. The aim of the threshold criteria is to create a more modern, efficient and transparent regulatory process, and to counter over-regulation.
We need to ensure that cases handled by the Society are dealt with in a proportionate and effective manner without compromising patient safety and we believe that the proposals will achieve this. I encourage anybody with an interest in these issues to take part in this important consultation."
The consultation is open to any individual or organisation wishing to submit evidence. A questionnaire is distributed by the Society to its members and other relevant bodies and can be downloaded from the Society's website here. The consultation will close on 18 April 2008.
Since June 2007 - December 2007 the Society's Inspectorate has successfully dealt with 27 single one-off dispensing errors, with the average time from receipt of complaint to closure of complaint approximately 11 weeks.
