Spending Less Time In Bed At Night Leads To Academic Problems For Schoolchildren

Restricting the time that schoolchildren spend in bed at night has a significantly negative effect on academic performance, according to a study of 74 children between 6 and 12 years of age. Results also show an increase in attention problems during one week of sleep restriction when the children's average time in bed was decreased by more than 2.5 hours compared to their normal sleep routines. The study fails to show, however, that a decrease in sleep opportunity produces more hyperactive or aggressive behaviors in healthy children with no history of behavioral problems or academic difficulty.

The children spent one week on their normal school-night sleep schedule and one week on an optimized schedule of at least 10 hours in bed per night. The week of restricted sleep limited their time in bed each night to eight hours for first or second graders and 6.5 hours for children in third grade or above. Teachers completed weekly ratings of classroom behavior and performance for the participants.

"Children identified by teachers as having academic problems should be screened for insufficient sleep, which may be directly influencing the appearance of learning difficulties," the authors write. "In addition, similar sleep screening is also indicated for children with attention or concentration problems, as these problems may increase in severity if patterns of insufficient sleep are sustained."
