The Learning Disability Coalition's Response To The Government's Putting People First Initiative, UK
Dame Jo Williams, chair of the Learning Disability Coalition and chief executive of Mencap, said: "This is good news and the Learning disability Coalition is keen to work with Government at central and local level. We are urging the government to give the same priority to people with a learning disability as it does to the ageing population who are accessing the social care system, allowing both priority groups to experience life changing services.
" It is also vital that the assessment process for those wanting care is professional, open and accessible for people with a learning disability and their families. Individual budgets can work well when fully focussed on the needs of individuals and not seen as a way to make cost savings by local councils."
